Just did a search for a vintage scarf pattern and yours came up ! - my uncle gave me a lot of knitting today (for a craft stall I'm doing) that my aunt did quite a few years ago that he'd kept and in it was 2 of these scarves !
She must have done them from an original pattern and they are in DK, the max number of stitches is 29 in gst and 15 stitches in rib (where the scarf decreases).
I'm definitely going to have a go at one !

Ha ha, I'm glad that you clarfied the logisitics of having the Queens of the Stone Age shouting at you in your kitchen! Wow, imagine...that would be pretty scary!

I have fallen into this knitted trap many times before. Funnily enough, I always read food recipes all the way through before I start, but I can't seem to get it into my head to treat my knitting recipes with the same consideration. I guess because I'm always too eager to get started!

Hello Christina, I've only just spotted your comment - sorry for my neglect. I have a strange fascination with Beverley Nichols and own a few of his books so it's great to hear your memories of him as an author. I can imagine him as a slightly comical figure to younger generations as time went by.

Another interesting character consigned to history - thanks for sharing.

Yes I whole heartedly agree we look up to women who knew how to cope with finite resources compared to people now who have been spoilt for too long with too many cheap clothes, cheap furniture and cheap food who now moan and say they won't be able to cope with the necessary cuts. The women in the past could appreciate everything and saw the value in everything they had.

I have been trying, without success, to obtain the knitting pattern for the Sarah Lund jumper from Series 1 (in English). Can you help? I cannot afford to buy the jumper.

Memories of scenes in a book from my childhood surface from time to time with great clarity- I may simply have read it at an impressionable age but it seems to me that the story and ideas it contained were highly original and vividly drawn. Evidently they have stayed with me for many years since.

I never actually owned the book, "The Tree that Sat Down"; I got it (and the sequel "The Stream that Stood Still") from the local library. So it was only recently in acquiring a second hand copy that I was surprised to find the author was Beverley Nichols.
I remembered him only as one of the old school celebrity figures of fun for the youth of the day (1970) - a silly old cat-lover who wrote a column for Woman's Own.
Teenage arrogance - and ignorance.
